Government Executive Magazine - Recent "Adapt or Die" Article

Harmon sheds light on how the Israeli army operates and gives an honest look at the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as experienced through the eyes of a man who is both an American citizen and an Israeli soldier.

Adam has been a guest on several CNN and Fox programs – including American Morning, CNN International, and Larry King. In addition, he has been a guest on dozens of public radio and news talk programs, including Armed Forces Radio and Laura Ingraham.

During his interviews, Israeli Paratrooper and Special Operations reservist Adam Harmon speaks to a broad spectrum of military and Middle Eastern political issues. The following questions serve as examples:

  1. From a military perspective, what went wrong and what went right in Lebanon?
  2. What operations are being conducted by the Israeli military in Lebanon and the West Bank today? Are they effective?
  3. As a military culture that is known to be highly adaptive, how will the Israeli military change its tactics and its strategy as the result of its recent fight with Hezbollah?
  4. What is the likelihood of renewed fighting between Hezbollah and Israel? What can be done to reduce the chances? How can Hezbollah be kept from remaining an armed militia?
  5. How has the conflict in Lebanon impacted the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and regional stability?
  6. What can the US military learn from the recent conflict between Hezbollah and Israel?
  7. How is the Israeli military culture and training methods different from the US military? What can each military culture learn from the other?
  8. Given the critical importance of security and deterrence to the survival of Israel, how will the government and military respond to internal and public criticism of its policies?
  9. More of today’s battles seem to be occurring in heavily populated areas. Based on your experience with the IDF as well as your dialogue with the US Marine Corps and the US Army, what are the difficulties of urban warfare? What tactics are employed by the Israeli army in these situations and how are they different from U.S. military tactics?
  10. Why is the West losing the PR wars in the Middle East?
  11. How is the new Palestinian government different from its predecessor? How will relations between Israel and the Palestinians change in the near term and how will this effect Israeli military operations?

Having served in the Israeli army since 1990, Adam offers an insider’s look into this elite, and often misunderstood, military force.

Today, Harmon lives in the United States, but still serves with an Israeli Special Operations reserve unit. He also provides input to the United States military regarding urban warfare best practices and military training methodologies.
